21 Day Fast Scripture Reading and Devotion: Day 9

Scripture Reading: James 4:13-17

Whether we’ll admit it or not, we all like to believe we have some control over our lives, and many of us work hard to maintain that control. We work, we study, we save and we plan and because we do all these things, we can be led to think we actually have a grip on our future. But have you ever considered how little control we actually hold? All it would take is receiving a call with a bad diagnosis from the doctor, getting laid off from your job, losing someone close to you, or going through a pandemic (as we all recently experienced), and you’d realize that your life can change in an instant.

Yet, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing that we don’t have as much control as we might like to think, as long as there is someone in control. In times where you feel lost in life, wouldn’t it be comforting to know that things aren’t out of control, but there’s someone who’s in absolute control who is working out a good purpose even though you might not be to see or feel it? Though you may not see the pilot flying the plane, you can trust he knows how to get you through turbulence and how to get you safely where you need to go. What confidence and peace could you have even in the face of an uncertain future if you trusted God like that?

The good news of the Bible is that there is a God who is not only sovereign, but he’s good and he works for the good of those who love him. (Rom. 8:28) He can be trusted because he’s proven over and over again that he has your best interest in his heart. If you ever doubt that, the cross is all the evidence you or I could ever need. At the cross, we see a God that would willingly bear the absolute worst in order to give us his best. So learn to let go of the little control you’re trying to cling to, and start handing it over to God today. Seek his wisdom and his way over every decision, plan, and ambition, and rest in the fact that your tomorrow is in his loving hands.
