Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:1-16

Corporate worship isn’t simply an experience, it’s actually a necessity. It’s something that we,  as spiritual amnesiacs, desperately need. What does it mean that we’re spiritual amnesiacs?  Simply that as you and I live in this world, we often forget the most important spiritual truths  that our souls need—truths like who God is and what he’s done for us in the gospel; truths  like who we are and whose we are; truths like where God is taking us and who he’s making  us into. We forget and we lose our way, so God uses corporate worship to remind us and  bring us back.

When God’s people gather in services of corporate worship, something powerful is at  work: our gathering becomes a living testimony to one another of our true identity as both  sinners and children of grace. Everywhere else in this world, you may be known by what you  do, what you’ve achieved, what you own, or who you’re associated with. It’s only in the  gathering of God’s people that you are confronted with the truth that you’re known in eternity  not by who you are but by who Christ is and by all that he’s done on your behalf. Through  singing, through the preaching of God’s word, through the holy sacraments, and through the  fellowship of the church, God is tethering you and me to himself and to his redemptive plan  he’s currently unfolding through his church.

God knew we would, at many times and in many ways, forget the most important  things in life. He also knew that our forgetfulness would be at the root of so much of our anxiety, fear, and lack of peace in life. This is why he calls you and me to “not neglect to meet  together” (Heb. 10:25). He gives us the gift of one another to be the cure to our spiritual  amnesia. So let me ask you: are you making the most of his gift, and is it something you value  deeply?
