Scripture Reading: John 15:1-17
You were created to be dependent—the question is, on what or whom are you depending at this very moment? And here’s a follow up question: whatever or whomever it is that you’re depending on, is it working out for you? The hope of the past 21 days and this corporate fast has been that you’d find your way back to depending on the only one who can offer you true and eternal life. Because if you and I don’t, we’ll find ourselves depending on things and people that don’t give us life, but drain our lives.
I don’t know about you, but I feel like life is always moving at a hurried pace. There’s an endless list of things to do, people to meet, places to visit, and dreams to chase. Perhaps only a pandemic could slow us down, but even then, we still somehow managed to fill our lives with the work and stress of getting back to the “normal” pace of life—the one that had us so busy even before COVID ever came along. Yet, in the midst of all the busyness, have you ever asked yourself if you’re actually accomplishing anything at all? This isn’t to downplay anyone’s current responsibilities—indeed, some of us are involved in important work. But if we believe in an eternity that stretches beyond this life, and if we believe that the most eternally significant thing is the God around whom all of eternity revolves—again, I ask, what are you and I really accomplishing unless our lives are tethered to him?
As you live, work, and play in this world, remember that God is always inviting you to start doing what you and I were created to do—that is, finding full satisfaction and contentment in him. There’s a fuller joy, firmer peace, and greater life available to those who decide to stop depending on themselves or the things/people around them, and actually start depending on Jesus. Learn what it means to abide in him—after all, there’s nothing you could do in all eternity that’s more important than that.
